Between 1968 and 1998, over 50,000 people died from asbestos related illnesses. Still, thousands die every year due to asbestos dust exposure.
The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations, 2012, state that an asbestos survey must be conducted for ALL commercial properties, to identify, assess
and manage any asbestos containing materials (ACM). Removal of asbestos is NOT normally necessary. However, they should be suitably labelled, logged in an ‘asbestos register’
and monitored on a six-monthly basis.
Asbestos containing materials are made by weaving together asbestos fibres, or by mixing them with other substances. The three main types
of asbestos are White (Chrysotile), Brown (Amosite) and Blue (Crocidolite).
Asbestos containing materials were used extensively until 1998 as a result of their insulating and fire proof properties. Despite now being the subject of bans, they can still be found in a diverse range of locations, including:
Roofing panels

Guttering and soffits
Floor tiles
Ceiling tiles
Textured coatings
Fire blankets
Fire proof coatings
Rope, gaskets, seals

Lagging
