Legionnaires' disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems
In this ACOP, the Health & Safety Commission (HSC) details the requirements placed on businesses to assess & control the risk of exposure to legionella bacteria.
The ACOP covers relevant sections of the Health & Safety at Work Act, 1974, plus the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, 1999. The main recommendations outlined in the ACOP are:
+ Completion of a legionella risk assessment at least every two years
+ Registration, monitoring & cleaning of all cooling towers
+ Regular water temperature and tank checks, plus the flushing of irregularly used outlets
+ Keeping records of all inspections and flushing
+ Holding up-to-date policy and procedure documents
+ Maintaining an ongoing staff training programme
+ Maintaining suitable management structure, including 'Responsible Person' cover
