The Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) for the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems, L8, states that a legionella risk assessment should be conducted at
least every two years, by a competent person. This risk assessments should include checks on:

Case study - London hospital
A patient at a major London hospital contracted Legionnaires' disease from
the hospital's water system and died. The case was investigated by the HSE,
but no prosecutions were brought. We had recently
conducted a legionella risk assessment on site and an action plan was in
place to complete our recommendations within a reasonable timeframe.
Case study - Nottingham hotel
A man who had stayed at a Nottingham hotel contracted Legionnaires' disease and died. No direct link with the hotel was
ever proved, but the hotel was prosecuted as they had not conducted a legionella risk assessment and their water system was in a poor condition.
The associated costs and bad publicity led to their closure shortly afterwards.
